I thought that I would wait for the deluge of school uniform pictures to make their way from social media before writing this. Whilst it is a little bit different to what I normally write, I felt it was something that needed writing. Now that Heidi is starting nursery, I penned this after the first day…
An Open Letter
Dear Heidi
I am proud of you. I am proud of who you are and the journey that you are going on. However, it is time to let you go, just a little bit.
Yes, it is only starting nursery but today was the first time that you will be left with someone who isn’t family. Yes, we have been extremely fortunate with childcare, but it still stings a little bit. You are growing up. Growing up to be a brilliant girl, and this is all part of your growing up. But it still hurts a little.
You have no idea how proud I was to be the one who got you dressed for the first time in your uniform.
You have no idea how scared I was that I was going to burst into tears when driving us there.
You have no idea how proud I am to be your daddy.
You were so happy to be starting nursery. Just like you are so happy to go anywhere or do anything. You are always happy, always enthusiastic, always sociable.
Never change.
As you went off to play with the teacher, you had the confidence to just go and not look back. Within minutes, you were joining in with the group and being the enthusiastic little girl I love. The social skills you have developed with your friends and all the adventures we go on have paid off. You have the confidence to be exactly who you want to be.
As I was about to go, I could see a slight fear in your face. It was probably a reflection of how I was feeling. I didn’t want to let go. But you stayed strong. You were brilliant. You always are brilliant.
Then we were apart. It was an hour. Only an hour. But I was so eager to see you! You were so happy with your freedom and wanted to tell the world. So much so, you wanted to go straight to the Rainbow Factory to show off your new uniform and to tell them all about nursery! Unbelievable!
You are growing up. You are becoming your own person and that is a brilliant thing. Whilst one part of our adventure is drawing to a conclusion, another part is about to begin and I can’t wait. Being your daddy is the best thing ever and always will be.
Always remember, I am proud of you….
